Abstract:
I propose that ecological identity is conscious and embodied awareness of the self as a biotic constituent of a greater sentient system. This essay will use critical theory interspersed with autobiographical reflection in italicized text to illustrate how cultivating an ecological identity can be instrumental in redirecting individual and societal worldviews toward more sustainable living practices. I will also briefly explain how a Western worldview has contributed to our disconnection from nature and our natural selves, and how ecopsychology offers resolution toward developing ecological identity. I will then explain my own process for cultivating idioms of an ecological self from within a multidisciplinary art practice.
