Abstract:
TELUS Communications Inc. has a rich history of supplying communication services to the Canadian marketplace for over 100 years. The telecommunication environment has continued to grow, develop and change as customer and business needs evolve. In delivering to this growth, one area of importance is the delivery of hosting services within the Alberta Marketplace. The Calgary Internet Data Center (CIDC) was created in 1999 as a response to address this customer need and to drive a profit for TELUS. It is a assessment of the CIDC where the applied project will address some of the current strategic and operational challenges.
Currently the areas surrounding leadership, a recognition of the value to TELUS of hosting as a service, organizational structure, the competitive landscape, and the ability of TELUS to manage its resources are the core focus of the study. Within these areas information was researched and analysis completed to determine what the largest challenges that needed to be addressed were. The research was completed both internally at TELUS and externally through literature.
From this applied study a series of six recommended steps are provided to assist in beginning to change the environment and create a profitable and effective plan to address the concerns. These solutions are both strategic and operational in nature and are presented in order of deployment for change. By addressing these needs TELUS can begin to change the customer and employee perceptions of the CIDC and create a growth environment. Through delivering on the recommendations TELUS will be able to not only address the core issues within the CIDC, but begin to enable future services and solutions.
Learning Experience:The end results of the project were not was orginially anticipated and it created the need to follow carefully understand the research outcomes.
